Moving checklist for New York and New Jersey

A four-week plan for organizing access, packing, transport, and the details that make moving day easier.

Professional moving support with packed boxes

A smoother move begins before the first box is lifted. The most useful plan is not complicated: define what is moving, confirm access at both locations, and give every box a clear destination.

Four weeks before the move

Choose the preferred date and write down the complete origin and destination addresses. Decide whether you need a vehicle, loading and unloading help, furniture disassembly, junk removal, or a combination of services. Create a simple inventory and flag heavy, fragile, oversized, or high-value items.

Contact both buildings when applicable. Ask about loading areas, elevators, permitted working hours, parking instructions, and any documentation they require. These details vary by property, so direct confirmation is safer than assuming.

Two weeks before

  • Pack one room at a time and label each box with its contents and destination room.
  • Measure large furniture and the narrowest doors, hallways, and stairs.
  • Separate items that should not go in the moving vehicle, including essential documents, medication, keys, and valuables.
  • Confirm the service scope, addresses, contact person, access notes, and estimated volume.

Useful photos of entrances, stairs, elevators, parking areas, and large items can make an estimate and work plan much clearer.

The final 48 hours

Prepare an essentials box with chargers, basic tools, cleaning supplies, water, and anything needed for the first night. Disassemble only the pieces that require it and keep screws or hardware in labeled bags attached to the correct item. Confirm the arrival window and make sure one person can answer questions during the job.

On moving day

Keep pathways open, protect pets and children from active work areas, and assign one person to direct where items go. Before leaving, walk through closets, cabinets, storage areas, and outdoor spaces. At the destination, check that boxes and furniture reached the intended rooms before the team leaves.

When another service helps

If unwanted furniture or debris is taking up space, scheduling junk removal before the move can reduce what must be transported. If the move includes office desks or workstations, plan assembly support as a separate phase so the new space is ready in the right order.
